The IRS requires electronic filing for each return reporting 25 or more vehicles; however, everyone is encouraged to file electronically. The IRS officially released, the 2012-2013 tax period begins July 1, 2012 through June 30 OBD2 Scanner, 2013. Beginning on July 1, 2012, you are able to pay your HVUT for the New year. The deadline for payment is August 31, 2012.
What is the HVUT? It is a Federal Excise Tax for highway motor vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. The tax ranges from $100 to $550 per year based on the vehicle weight.
When do you file? Form 2290 must be filed for the month the taxable vehicle is first used on public highways during the current period. The current period begins July 1, 2012, and ends June 30, 2013. August 31, 2012 is the deadline for any vehicle that will be on the road in July. If you purchase a vehicle anytime during the tax period, Form 2290 must be filed by the last day of the month following the month of first used Launch CReader 8001. For example, if the vehicle is purchased and put on the road anytime in November 2012, the deadline to Efile 2290and pay the tax will be December 31, 2012. The tax will be based on the number of months used within the tax period.
So remember, July 1, 2012 is the beginning of the new tax period for your HVUT and you will not receive a reminder in the mail from the IRS. August 31, 2012 is the deadline for filing your return and paying any tax due.
